The HDL 5100 silent chain is a special type of chain for heavy loads (HDL = Heavy Duty Link). It has a pitch of p=3/4" (19.05 mm) and a nominal width of bn=100 mm.

Unlike standard roller chains, which engage with the sprocket via rollers, silent chains have precise teeth on the underside of the link  that fit into the corresponding profile on the sprockets, resulting in precise torque transmission without slippage.

Compared to standard roller chains, HDL silent chains exhibit significantly higher strength and wear resistance, which leads to their use primarily in applications where operational reliability is required.

Due to their design, HDL chains have lower noise levels and are more compact, so they are advantageously used where equipment noise is undesirable or for smaller installation spaces.

These chains most frequently find applications in the automotive industry, e.g. as timing mechanisms, as well as in mechanical engineering on machine tools or pressing machines, or in power engineering equipment.
